Flu Shot (Influenza Vaccine)

Available Vaccines

• Fluzone® – Standard flu shot for most adults and children
• FluLaval® – Another option for broad protection
• Fluad® – Specifically designed for seniors 65+ to improve immune response
• FluMist® (nasal spray) – For limited use in eligible patients who prefer a needle-free option

Free with OHIP

In Ontario, flu shots are free for all residents aged 6 months and older. No prescription or doctor’s referral is required.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) Vaccines

Protect yourself against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a common respiratory infection that can lead to serious illness in older adults and those with underlying conditions.

• Abrysvo®

Who Should Consider RSV Vaccination?

• Adults 60 years and older
• Individuals with chronic health conditions (e.g., heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, weakened immune system)

Coverage & Cost

• RSV vaccines are not covered by OHIP
• They are available as private-pay
• Insurance coverage may apply depending on your plan (check with your provider)

Non-Seasonal & Routine Vaccines

These vaccines are generally not funded by OHIP. Coverage may be available through private insurance or employer health benefits.

Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Brand: Shingrix®

• Recommended for adults 50+
• Two-dose series for long-lasting protection
• Coverage: Free only for seniors 65–70 years old; private-pay for all others

HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

Brand: Gardasil®9

• Protects against cervical, throat, anal, and other cancers
• Recommended for youth and young adults
• Coverage: Free under school program (Grade 7–12 catch-up); private-pay for adults

Hepatitis A & B

Brands: Havrix® (Hep A), Engerix-B® (Hep B), Twinrix® (combined Hep A & B)

• Protects against serious liver infections
• Recommended for travelers and higher-risk groups
• Coverage: Private-pay or insurance for most adults

Meningococcal (Men-C-ACYW)

Brands: Menactra®, Menveo®, Nimenrix®

• Protects against meningitis and blood infections
• Required for Hajj & Umrah pilgrims (proof of vaccination mandatory for Saudi visa approval)
• Coverage: Certain youth doses covered in school program; adult/travel doses are private-pay

Pneumococcal

Brands: Pneumovax 23®, Prevnar 20®

• Protects against pneumonia, meningitis, bloodstream infections
• Recommended for seniors and high-risk adults
• Coverage: Free for adults 65+ and certain high-risk groups; private-pay outside eligibility

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Td/Tdap)

Brands: Adacel®, Boostrix®

• Booster recommended every 10 years or during pregnancy
• Coverage: Free in cases of injury, pregnancy, or youth program; otherwise private-pay
